Garth completed his Commerce degree (Valuation & Property Management) at Lincoln University and began his career in 1981 with the Gisborne office of the NZ Govt Valuation Department. After holding several management positions in Valuation NZ offices of Lower Hutt, Wellington and Takapuna, Garth was appointed Managing District Valuer for the Tauranga office of Valuation New Zealand /Quotable Value. This was followed by the role of Associate with Property Solutions, a Tauranga based property valuation and advisory company.
In 2004 Garth and co-director Mark Grinlinton, established Landmass Technology to provide rating valuation services to local government. In 2015 the business was acquired by Opteon. From the first Valuation Service Provision contract won in 2004 from Quotable Value to the eight contracts over the Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Auckland regions, Landmass was widely recognised as a quality rating valuation service provider.
Garth has considerable valuation experience in the commercial and industrial sector for large cities and provincial locations and continues to provide a range of valuation advice in specialist areas to several local authorities regarding the sale and acquisition of land and assets.
In 2014 Garth was recognised for his contribution to property valuation in New Zealand, being made a Fellow of the Property Institute and Institute of valuers. Garth’s property valuation expertise includes national parks, buildings of national historical significance, geothermal plants, sea and airport assets and other major urban property. As the Revaluation Manager, he has overseen the delivery of thirty Local Authority Revaluations. This experience covered the implementation of new quality assurance systems, development of staff peer review systems and the business management issues associated with the district office in a national organisation.
